When picking a sigma mixer (also known as a double arm kneader), the discharge method is one of the key factors that affects efficiency, cleanliness, and material handling. Below are the main differences between the hydraulic tilt discharge and screw extrusion discharge designs.
Hydraulic tilt discharge: After mixing is done, the hydraulic system tilts the entire mixing chamber. The finished material flows out through the outlet by gravity, making sure it empties efficiently and completely.
1. Easy and fast discharge: The whole mixing chamber tilts hydraulically, so materials slide out quickly and thoroughly. Perfect for semi-fluid and paste-like materials.
2. Easy cleaning and maintenance: Since the tank can tilt fully, it’s easy to reach for cleaning or inspection – super convenient for frequent batch changes. Its simple mechanical and hydraulic design means fewer moving parts, so there’s less chance of mechanical breakdowns.
3. Great for medium-viscosity or granular materials: It works efficiently for materials with moderate viscosity and good flow, or for batches that need manual handling (like cutting or further proccesing)
Kneader with Extruder
After mixing is done, a screw shaft (installed at the bottom or side of the mixing chamber) starts rotating. It pushes the finished material out through the front outlet. This method is efficient, and it’s especially good for high-viscosity, sticky, or non-flowing materials – the kind that can’t be emptied by tilting.
1. Perfect for high-viscosity and high-solids materials: The extruder screw has powerful pushing force, so it handles highly viscous, elastic materials easily (the ones that are hard to discharge with a tilt mechanism).
2. Less labor, sealed process: It cuts down on manual work, lowering labor costs. It also prevents the product from getting contaminated during discharge – ideal for high-purity applications.
3. Ready for downstream processing right away: The extruded material comes out in a specific shape (e.g., strips), so it can be fed directly into subsequent processes like granulation or shaping without extra steps.
