When developing new formulations, laboratory mixing equipment plays a critical role in achieving stable and repeatable results. Recently, Karvil Machinery completed a 5L Vacuum Sigma Mixer with Screw Extruder and Water Chiller for a customer in Norway. The machine has been specially designed to process a formulation consisting of silica, different grades of methyl cellulose powder, and water, providing efficient mixing under vacuum while maintaining precise temperature control.
This project demonstrates how a compact laboratory sigma mixer can solve common processing challenges associated with high-viscosity materials.
The customer required a laboratory mixer that could accurately reproduce production conditions while handling a highly viscous formulation.
The material consists of:
Silica
Methyl cellulose powder
Water
During the mixing process, the viscosity increases significantly as the cellulose absorbs water. Conventional mixers often struggle with uneven dispersion, powder agglomeration, trapped air, and difficult discharge.
To overcome these issues, the customer selected a vacuum sigma mixer equipped with a screw extrusion discharge system.
Unlike high-speed mixers, a sigma blade kneader applies strong kneading and folding actions to move high-viscosity materials throughout the mixing chamber.
For this application, vacuum mixing offers several important advantages:
Removes trapped air from the mixture
Produces a smoother and denser final product
Improves dispersion of silica particles
Enhances consistency between batches
Reduces oxidation during processing
The result is a more homogeneous paste that meets laboratory testing and formulation development requirements.
One of the highlights of this machine is the integrated screw extrusion discharge system.
High-viscosity materials are often difficult to remove manually from the mixing chamber, leading to product loss and time-consuming cleaning.
The screw extruder continuously pushes the finished material out of the chamber, offering several benefits:
Faster discharge
Less material residue
Cleaner operation
Improved production efficiency
This design is particularly suitable for laboratory and pilot-scale production where valuable materials need to be recovered efficiently.
Mixing silica and cellulose generates frictional heat, which can affect material properties and processing consistency.
To maintain a stable mixing temperature, this laboratory kneader is equipped with:
Jacketed mixing chamber
2HP industrial water chiller
Continuous cooling water circulation
Stable temperature control helps protect heat-sensitive materials while ensuring consistent mixing performance.
This 5L laboratory vacuum sigma mixer includes:
Vacuum mixing system
Sigma mixing blades
Variable frequency speed control
Screw extrusion discharge
Jacketed cooling chamber
2HP industrial water chiller
SS304 mirror-polished contact parts
Siemens motors
Schneider electrical components
Compact laboratory design
These features make the machine suitable for research laboratories, universities, pilot production facilities, and material development centers.
Although this project focuses on silica and methyl cellulose, the machine is suitable for many other high-viscosity materials, including:
Silicone rubber
Ceramic paste
Sealants
Adhesives
Battery materials
Pharmaceutical paste
Cosmetic cream
Carbon paste
Conductive materials
Polymer compounds
The equipment can also be customized according to different process requirements.
Before delivery, every Karvil sigma mixer undergoes a complete factory acceptance test.
The testing process includes:
Blade rotation inspection
Variable speed verification
Vacuum performance testing
Cooling system inspection
Screw extrusion operation
Electrical control testing
Safety interlock verification
Only after passing all inspections is the equipment prepared for export.
