Karvil Machinery has recently completed and prepared a 3000L explosion-proof sigma mixer with screw discharge for a customer in the UK.
The machine was designed for mixing high molecular weight polyisobutylene (PIB) with additives, a demanding application where material viscosity, mixing torque and discharge performance are critical.
High molecular weight PIB can be extremely viscous during processing. As viscosity increases, the mixer needs sufficient torque to keep the material moving while providing effective kneading and additive dispersion.
For this project, the customer required more than a standard industrial mixer.
Karvil configured the machine with a twin-motor drive, electric heating, screw discharge, weighing system and explosion-proof electrical components to meet the application requirements.
The control system uses a Siemens PLC and inverter, while Innomotics motors provide the drive power required for this high-load mixing application.
With a total volume of 3000L, the mixer is designed for large-batch industrial production.
The large working chamber provides sufficient space for processing high-viscosity formulations while the sigma blades continuously fold and knead the material.
The machine can also be configured according to the customer's required working volume, filling ratio and material characteristics.
One of the key requirements of this project was reliable mixing performance for highly viscous PIB.
The twin-motor drive provides high torque to the sigma blades and allows the mixer to handle the resistance generated by the material during intensive kneading.
This configuration is particularly useful for applications where the material becomes difficult to move as viscosity increases.
Discharging highly viscous material can be challenging.
Instead of relying only on gravity, the screw discharge system actively conveys the processed material toward the outlet.
For sticky PIB-based formulations, this provides a controlled method of unloading the batch and helps improve discharge consistency.
The discharge system was therefore an important part of the overall process design for this UK project.
The mixer is equipped with an electric heating system to provide controlled heat during processing.
Temperature can have a significant influence on the viscosity and processing behavior of high molecular weight PIB. Maintaining the required process temperature can therefore help improve material movement and mixing consistency.
The heating system is integrated into the overall machine control system.
The machine uses a Siemens PLC and inverter-based control system.
The PLC provides centralized process control, while the inverter allows the mixer drive to operate at the required speed according to the production process.
The control system can also be integrated with functions such as temperature monitoring and weighing to provide more convenient process management.
Safety was another important requirement of this project.
The mixer was supplied with an explosion-proof configuration covering the relevant electrical and drive components according to the customer's requirements.
For industrial applications involving potentially hazardous materials or environments, the explosion-proof configuration must be selected based on the actual hazardous-area classification and operating conditions.
Karvil can work with customers to define the appropriate safety configuration during the engineering stage.
The 3000L sigma mixer is also equipped with a weighing system.
Integrated weighing allows the batch weight to be monitored during production and can help improve the accuracy of material loading and batch management.
This is particularly useful for formulations that require precise proportions of base materials and additives.
For a customized industrial mixer, manufacturing is only one part of the project.
Before delivery, Karvil carries out the necessary assembly, inspection and testing procedures to ensure that the equipment is ready for installation at the customer's site.
For this 3000L UK project, the completed machine was prepared for shipment after the manufacturing and inspection process.
The project reflects Karvil Machinery's approach to industrial mixing equipment: design the machine around the material and process rather than simply selecting a standard machine size.
